Anxiety
Internal Family Systems

IFS and “parts work” is a unique modality which emphasizes self-compassion and kind attention to all our various “parts”. Have you ever found yourself saying things like, “I’m torn”, “I have mixed feelings about that” or “part of me feels one way and part of me feels another way.” These are just a few examples of how “parts” show up in our everyday experience. In the case of trauma, some parts become burdened and compartmentalized in an effort to help us survive. These parts can be stuck in the past, but when “Self” is accessed, it can bear witness to these parts and help them let go of their burdens. “Self” is not a part, but an intrinsic, spiritual core that is present at birth and cannot be damaged—indeed, it is the noble efforts of our parts that take on the burdens that would harm the “Self” and therefore need to be appreciated and acknowledged for the hard work they are doing.

These are the six assumptions of IFS and “parts”:

1- All parts have good intentions, even those who misbehave, therefore, we begin therapy with a radical invitation: “all parts are welcome”

2-Our psychic response to injury is predictable: when vulnerable parts are wounded, other parts step in to protective roles.

3- Protective parts behave in predictable ways, some of which look pathological.

4- A destabilized, disrupted inner system can become reintegrated and balanced once it is in relationship with the client’s “Self”

5- The Self is neither created nor cultivated and cannot be destroyed but is, rather, intrinsic and present from birth.

6- Every person had a Self, and the Self can be accessed for healing in every person.

I have seen radical healing and powerful shifts in relationship to the past doing this work with my clients.  I believe you have the answers and the resources to get what you need and how to heal. I simply aide you in gaining access to “Self” and to help parts let go of their burdens.

Depression
Brainspotting

Where we look affects how we feel. Where we look also gives us access to different parts of the brain holding, memory, emotions, and body sensations.

Brainspotting is a powerful, focused treatment method that works by identifying, processing and releasing core neurophysiological sources of emotional/body pain, trauma, dissociation and a variety of other challenging symptoms. Brainspotting is a simultaneous form of diagnosis and treatment, enhanced with Bi-lateral sound, which is deep, direct, and powerful yet focused and containing.

Brainspotting works with the deep brain and the body through its direct access to the autonomic and limbic systems within the body’s central nervous system. It is theorized that Brainspotting taps into and harnesses the body’s innate self-scanning capacity to process and release focused areas (systems) which are in a maladaptive homeostasis (frozen primitive survival modes). This may also explain the ability of Brainspotting to often reduce and eliminate body pain and tension associated with physical conditions.

Brainspotting and IFS are great partners as both provide access to our various "parts" and allow for communication with, understanding of, and release of burdens our parts and body carry.

Relationships
TRIP (Trauma Reprocessing and Integration Process

TRIP is an amazing way of working that combines the best of "parts work", brain/eye techniques, and attachment theory to provide a different way of connecting to and understanding our parts while supporting "internal attachment" between our parts. TRIP works one eye at a time to allow connection to different "parts" that show up in the different eyes--one eye typically more connected to"past", "wound", or "trauma", the other more connected to "present", "calm", and "coping". By mindfully switching between eyes these parts can "talk" to each other, resulting in more inner compassion, connection, and understanding.

TRIP follows three processes:

- Projection process - Healing projection is essential in trauma work. Trauma affects our ability to discern safety, threat, and care. Our brain visually, physically, emotionally and cognitively offers distortions and projections to keep us safe. These projections can get in the way of the therapeutic relationship and hinder healing.

- Permission process - Boundaries, permission and consent are foundational aspects impacted upon trauma. This process helps parts heal the effects of past permission breaches.

- Compassion Process - This is the heart of trauma processing. All human elements impacted by the trauma are sought to be reconnected, regulated, and integrated. Shattered pieces of trauma are reunited to establish an integrative self.

Clients report connecting with parts they could not access through traditional "Parts work" before and gain knowledge of "blocks" that previously were unable to be explored with other modalities.

Couples Therapy
Janaina Fisher "Structural Dissociation"

Janaina Fisher is known and respected world wide for her "Structural Dissociation" framework for the treatment of dissociative disorders and DID. Janina's work includes the concepts of "parts work" as it relates to the specific experience of dissociative disorders and incorporates somatic experiencing techniques as well as profound knowledge of how trauma impacts the nervous system. I consider her information to be foundational for any therapist working with trauma. Sharing Janaina's information with Clients has resulted in greater understanding of problematic behaviors which reduces shame and increases self-compassion--paving the way to deeper healing.

Traditional IFS is not appropriate for DID systems. Janaina's information as well as frameworks of other experts in the DID treatment world inform my work with DID Clients. I also regularly attend a consult group for DID professionals to support my work with DID systems as each one is different and worthy of specialized treatment and support.

Trauma
DBT and ACT

DBT or "Dialectical Behavioral Therapy" developed by Marsha Linehan is a treatment program developed to help Clients who are struggling to stay regulated as a result of trauma experiences.  While first devoloped for "Borderline Personality Disorder" it has since been adapted for other populations such as addictions and eating disorders. DBT is a "skills based" modality that focuses on the "four pillars" of Distress tolerance, Interpersonal relationship skills, Mindfulness, and Emotion regulation. DBT is not a "trauma therapy" per-se, but is offers many useful tools to help us regulate as we move through the healing process. DBT is usually used in a structured, time-limited environment by trained specialists, therefore I do not "do" DBT, but incorporate various aspects of the program with my Clients when appropriate.

ACT or "Acceptance and Commitment Therapy" was developed by Steven Hayes while working with Clients struggling with chronic health conditions and pain. ACT is cognitively/behaviorally based, designed to help Clients live meaningful lives despite limits due to chronic health issues. While I will always hold hope for my Client's healing of medical issues (I have seen miracles!) ACT's focus on "values based living" is a helpful paradigm for all my Clients as it helps with decision making and finding a path to a life worth living.
